Baidoa City Storm Water Drainage
Detailed description of project
The Baidoa Stormwater Drainage Project is a transformative infrastructure initiative aimed at addressing the severe and persistent flooding challenges in Baidoa, the interim capital of South West State in Somalia. With a population that has rapidly expanded due to conflict-induced displacement, Baidoa faces immense strain on its urban infrastructure.
Located within a semi-arid region with seasonal rainfall patterns, the city lacks an adequate drainage network to cope with stormwater during the rainy seasons. As a result, the city frequently experiences widespread flooding, causing damage to homes, roads, markets, schools, and health facilities, while also displacing vulnerable communities.
The project forms part of broader resilience-building efforts under the Somalia Urban Resilience Project Phase II (SURP-II), financed by the World Bank and implemented through UNOPS in collaboration with local authorities.
